I grew up near Greystone. It was a basically a self-contained town as you can imagine with so many patients. Didn't realize till reading the article just how many. Greystone was the"boogy-man" for many of us little kids, being told stories of escapes and running thru the woods etc. They had their own train spur, a dairy herd, butchers - - as little kids our neighbor's husband would drive us up there for ice cream. Went ice skating on the ponds - they were obviously man-made and think they were originally the ice ponds. As a snoopy teenager I learned a family member was placed there in the 40's for what I was told was epilepsy. Still try occasionally to learn what became of her. Even though as an adult I had a friend who worked there, I still think of Greystone as a creepy [but fascinating] place & support preserving it.
When we were kids, my mother would yell at us and say, "You're going to put me in Greystone!" When I grew up, I found that there really was such a place. When they closed Greystone, I read a good article on its history, but I don't remember where the article appeared.
I went to the sanatorium in Cedar Grove 20+ yrs ago with friends during a full moon around Halloween. That place was spooky as hell. From the drive up the hill to the rundown building and all the stories of.tortured souls & weird noises. I only went to the 1st floor but if I recall there was 3 stories. Lots of abandoned medical equipment and old files were still in there.
Some look like they might be fun to hike around and or investigate, but these days you never know who is around or in those places. I might never see my loved ones again!
I've been to the so called "Devil's Tower" aka the former Rionda estate in Alpine a number of times. (It's been featured on Weird NJ before) Personally never saw any hauntings, ghosts, spirits or otherwise...most exciting thing I ever saw was a cat which must have wandered over from one of the houses that are around it LOL.
Supposedly you drive or walk backwards or something around it and you see the ghost of the wife of the guy who built it...I don't remember the exact story.
There's a little info about it here and also a pic though it appears to be from a few years ago:
