Since we seem to have a healthy amount of hate directed at pretty much every part of NJ from somewhere, I thought it might be interesting to post a poll.
I don't like North Jersey. It is more congested than I like. Hell, even my little shore town is more congested than I like but that is offset by the beaches.
I guess it is pretty obvious people are going to dislike where they do not live. I think the little shore towns are best because they are pretty, close to the beach, still within day trip distance of the city, and so on.

This made me laugh, and reflects a lot of the negativity that can be present here sometimes.
To add to your list
Northwest suburbs/exurbs: too boring, wealthy, my car struck a deer there once
Gold Coast and Gentrified towns: too expensive, too many hipsters, too many yuppies, no parking
Bergen County/ inner suburbs: too crowded, bad attitudes
Shore towns: No one really lives there, too far away, obligatory Jersey Shore reference
South Jersey Philly suburbs: where? terra incognita here be dragons
Well, since you asked, I prefer living in a rural area (the farther away the neighbors are the better), but each of the other two have their merits.
How far is enough to be content? I have my home on a 16 acre lot in the suburbs (West Windsor). It's not miles to the next neighbor, but it's private enough.
I dislike the redneck areas in SNJ the most. Urban blight is urban blight. You expect it in any state. Suburbs are suburbs. Commuter towns are commuter towns.
Country music loving, Nascar-watching racist white wannabe-hicks shouldn't be within an hour of NYC or PHI, among the largest cities in America, and as blue and northeastern as it gets.
Welfare queens and gang violence are bad. Toothless yokels who are just as poor, but living in trailers are worse.

As I get older, I find I like living closer to people. You never know when there is an emergency in the area, neighbors look out for each other while if you are isolated you have nowhere to turn.
