Hello all,

I am relocating from upstate NY to Northern NJ this summer (although I have previously lived in NYC).

I will be renting and originally started looking in Jersey City and Hoboken but our budget does not seem to be in line with my must-have list in those two cities, unfortunately.

I came across an absolutely gorgeous loft in Bayonne but I'm concerned about safety of the neighborhood. Specifically, I read another online post that mentioned the area is working class and generally safe but to avoid Avenue E & 17th Street, which is coincidentally right where the property I am interested in is located.

Is Bayonne in general safe? Is this part, (Ave E & 17th) specifically safe? I understand bad things happen everywhere and there are bad areas of every town but I don't want to be clutching my purse walking to my car or unable to walk my dog after dark etc.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Speaking as someone who lived in Bayonne for 18 years, and who continued to visit relatives in the city for many years thereafter, I can tell you that Bayonne as a whole is a safe town.

Is Bayonne pretty?
Except for a few select neighborhoods, no it is not pretty.
Is there nightlife?
For most people, the answer would be no.

However, for an urban area very close to NYC, it is safe.
In fact, there are several areas of Jersey City that are distinctly unsafe, unlike Bayonne, where there are no really unsafe areas. Some areas of Bayonne are...not particularly desirable...but they are not an urban jungle.

As to the neighborhood that you mentioned, I would classify it as an up & coming area, due to the opening of the decidedly upscale Silk Loft apartments located right in the area that you are considering.
(Hmmm...Actually, you might be talking about this development, even if you didn't mention it by name...)

The neighborhood has traditionally been a somewhat gritty lower-middle class area, consisting of 2 family wooden homes, built about 100 years ago--with varying degrees of preservation, plus some commercial buildings that are...old and unattractive. However, now that young professionals will be moving into that Silk Loft adaptive re-use development, the area will be dragged upward, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see more adaptive re-use taking place in that area.

Additionally, you would be only a 5 block walk from the Light Rail station at 22nd St, thus giving you easy access to mass transit into NYC.

In case you are not already aware of the Silk Loft development, here is a link:
Hoboken, NJ Apartments | SilkLofts
(Despite the wording in the link, these apartments are NOT in Hoboken!)

I currently live in Bayonne and love it here. Parts are indeed beautiful, downtown and close to county park. Your area is more gritty but maybe will improve. Silklofts are quite a good deal but you could go MUCH cheaper. I rent a duplex for 1400 to give you an idea. And I live in a nicer part of town. Anyway Bayonne's nightlife is growing, lot 13 is nearby with live music. Tons of amazing restaurants in Bayonne too.

By the way it is definitely safe here but issues can happen anywhere. If you have any questions you can always pm me.

There's lets of unsafe parts of Bayonne, they even have a trailer park. Where they found meth labs and there was a gun fight.

Cherrypick stories all you want, Bayonne hasn't had a homicide in well over a year that wasn't vehicular. For a city, this is very good. Tell me more about this gun fight lol

Many towns have trailer parks which unless you were looking for it, you would never ever notice it. (It is very out of the way). But there is no need to further defend the area.

Bayonne is safe. Compared to where I'm from brookyln it's like a freaking suburb lol but I'm more into the artsy rough neighborhood look. Seeing as I'm an artist myself. The area around silk lofts is very urban and Brooklyn like to me. A lot of brick structures and old homes, which for a new Yorker like me is a huge plus. That neighborhood in particular reminds me of williamsburg before the gentrification really kicked in.
