Even kids that could be yours or your nieces & nephews? Man, some ppl are ice cold around here. I lost the funniest SOB of a friend 6 months ago from many yrs of alcoholism. Only in his early 40s. The world is definitely a worse place without him.
Sorry for your loss, but who's fault is it that he's gone? Being an alcoholic or drug addict isn't circumstantial like growing up in poverty or having some genetic mental/physical defect.

In many cases I've seen it's a learned & accepted behavior. Yes one can grow up & not be dragged in. But genes & environment are huge influences.
I've yet to see any conclusive evidence of an "alcoholic gene". Environment can influence a lot of things from the way we talk, live, and think; but ultimately, we all make decisions. Just like I'm deciding to type this post, an alcoholic decides to pick up a bottle or a junkie picks up a needle. A person's environment can and does influence mental inputs and outputs, but someone still ultimately has to make a decision whether to engage in a harmful act or not. I find this idea that alcoholics or drug addicts are victims of circumstance to be incredibly false unless someone is totally devoid of any of the proper mental inputs to avoid this type of harmful behavior(which isn't the case in 21st century America)

there is no gene that controls this. but a lot of people will see their daddy do it and enjoy the fact that now they have an extra excuse for doing it. just the word "addiction" gives people an excuse to become "addicted" because now you have taken fault out of it. the whole concept of it being anything other than a choice is harmful to society.
At my brother's funeral, an escort of some sort (not sure if she was in jail or rehab) brought my ex-sister-in-law
Doubt it was jail. That normally takes a court order, is limited to family (not exes), someone has to pay for the escort, there's handcuffs involved, & often it's outside of visitors hours.

Yes, she had no handcuffs on. I wondered about that. I vaguely remember that she'd been arrested again for something or other just prior to that, so it was more likely some form of court-ordered rehab. She's totally fried now, and this is a revolving-door way of life for her.
For all this talk about Newark and Camden kids it seems the suburban kids do the hard drugs.
Yet nobody gave a damn when Nwk and Camden had "crack problems".
Now that heroin is affecting suburban kids all of a sudden everyone cares.
You've lived in this country HOW long and finally figured that out??
