I can't believe what I'm hearing. Yes, there are some bad parts of Belleville.. BUT there are also bad parts of MOntclair, bad PARTS OF NUTLEY- as well as every other town. I love living in Belleville.. the taxes are high, but they are quickly climbing everywhere. The grammar schools are good, and I agree that the Middle and High school aren't the best.. but that is the case for many of the high schools in this area.
you're crazy. there are no bad sections in Nutley. Nutley is one of the nicest towns in that area.
Belleville is a dump. Much better places to choose from. But if you are renting..and maybe get it real cheap..then maybe might consider. Notice there are alot of maybes.
Belleville is not bad at all. I have grown up here, and not saying I love it, but besides being boring, there's nothing wrong with it. Sure there are a few parts of town to avoid at night if you're alone. But I have walked these streets alone at all hours of the night.. literally have been out on the streets anywhere from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. I'm a white female, if it was so bad then trust me, I would know.
The schools are not the greatest, but most definitly not the worst. And they are slowly improving every year.
Also, if you talk to some of the older teachers who were around in belleville when it was all italian, they will tell you that it was worse back then. That the kids were actually much more violent than they are now.
A lot of people do not know where the borderline for Belleville/Newark/and Bloomfield, as they are all kind of meshed together on the southern end of town. But the Belleville part is really not bad at all.
As for the surrounding towns, some parts of Bloomfield are terrible compared to anypart of Belleville.
Nutley is nice if you like a predominantly white town, with plenty of rich stuck up white kids. However, after talking with the head detective of narcotics in essex county, he will tell you that Nutley has a larger drug problem than Belleville.
Each town is different, as far as I'm concerned, there are no major issues with Belleville. But just like any town in the area, keep your doors locked, your cars locked and don't hang around certain areas at late hours of the night.
I am considering moving into Belleville, mainly due to its proximity to work and its reasonable rent. I am a single male with no immediate plan of having kids. Could any one please point out where in Belleville to avoid?
Also, someone mentioned "the valley" near the railway track where it's a bit dodgy. Does anyone know where exactly it is? Is the back streets close to Rutger Street/Washington Ave okay?
Belleville is "rundown", "a dump", "a mini Newark"?!?!
The extremely high standards a lot of these NJians have is ridiculous. You scare the potential desirable away when the suburbanite superiority complex is let loose in NJ. Belleville is NOT that bad, it's just a working class area full of hard working people- It's blighted here and there, but it's generally a decent place to live if you're single and work nearby- Belleville has potential if you'd let it.
The school's are shabby, but you're in an urban area mind you. It's not a town where your constantly worried about your safety, It's actually pretty quiet.
I lived in Forest Hill (Newark), close to Belleville- You got to be kidding me with all this negativity. It's not the same Belleville it was 15-20 years ago, but neither is the state of NJ.
Having visited the town several times, my impression of Belleville is pretty close to yours.
