Does anyone know the laws regarding trapping of squirrels in NJ? I inquire b/c this afternoon while out for a walk, I heard banging noises coming from someone's yard and when I looked over, I saw a squirrel trapped in a trap cage desperately trying to get out. I have no idea why you'd trap squirrels on your front lawn especially a homeowner that lives near a public park.
I know for a fact this person has been charged with animal cruelty (for other unrelated offenses) in the past, so seeing this really upset me.
Is this illegal for him to do?

Contact your Police Dept's Animal Control department.

Perhaps the cage wasn't meant to trap a squirrel but some other animal.
If the intent was to trap a squirrel, it is possible this individual is trapping the squirrel to torture it in some manner.

Recividim for people who perpetrate animal cruelty are as bad as for pedophiles.

OMG!

See the fish and game regs that were re-written from a simple paragraph. You will neeed a lawyer, the DEP, SPCA, PETA and the EPA to figure out what is legal and then make a determination if it makes sense....only in NJ.

In any case there are hundreds of violators who trap and release squirrels across NJ.

Squirrels ahve great homing instincts by the way.

The stories of NJ homeowners terminating squirrels are recorded by the legion with no good conclusion as all end up as perps. Usually a disgruntled neighbor, wife or girlfriend sides with the squirrel for a taste of revenge.

If you get scratched or bitten by a squirrel you will need to get rabies shots.

Squirrels are most often responsible for fires and other home damage.

Squirrels are the most sought after game animal in the southeast US. Recipes a plenty. Great britian hates out gray squirrels introduced there, as they compete with the native red squirrels and a bounty has been placed on gray squirrels on the mother isle that outlaws fox hunting..

Failure to check a trap often, whether set legally or illegally, is unethical and cruel.

Squirrels = rats in fancy fur coats. I'd poison the miscreant squirrels in my yard if I could. Nothing but a constant pain in the ass.
