We moved from Ft. Greene in Brooklyn 6 months ago, looked at houses closer to Elm/Mission/New St than this one - If you want proximity to Bloomfield and Church, you can't go wrong in this area. If you are used to Jackson Heights, the riff raff east of you won't bother you. The walk to Bay Street is not a problem, really ever, and the police are fairly present. Remember, the "safeness" of the area is relative. I walked the area at night dozens of times, including up and down mission st in the dark, and was never once as concerned as I was walking down Myrtle Ave to the Dekalb St metro or through Ft Greene park in the dark. The police blotter is a great place to judge this for yourself. I'd live there with my young family, unfortunately, there wasn't much inventory in our price range - we lost out on several houses we liked b/c of bidding wars in proximity - and ended up moving to Montclair Heights, but we love Bloomfield Ave and are there all the time. Just remember that old houses take a lot to keep up and watch out for oil tanks....

Should be fine, but I think you have more upside potential in the walnut station area (n willow, forest) and you can still find some affordable houses.
