Does anyone know of a family friendly, safe, culturally diverse neighborhood/ community with affordable homes (2 to 3 bedrooms, 1.5 bathroom) under $300,000, where the commute to Midtown NYC daily by public transportation door to door is under or approx. 1 hour?

My family consists of stay at home wife with 2 young children (a toddler and a baby) so schools will be in the future. She would like for us to find a home with a yard or private/ gated community with a playground.*

I think she is looking for a suburban type of neighborhood because she feels it is safer for the kids. We are both from The Bronx and would like for a neighborhood where our children can play safely without being to worried about a lot of strangers passing freely. Most important is the public transportation commute into the city.

With your budget, I would suggest Springfield. There's no train station, but there is a jitney there that you can take to get to Short Hills train station which is about 45 minutes into NY Penn station.

The truth is, you're asking for a lot for your budget in a commuter's town. It helps that you accept a two bedroom home, however many places in your price range may have only one bathroom or may be a little over an hour to your job (at least) or may not be in a good school system.

As I said though, Springfield may be a good place to start your search. There aren't too many single family homes in your budget, but you have options (though, albeit, not pristinely updated). It's a pretty nice area and schools are pretty good. I know a family who moved there last year; they have a toddler and they like it very much.

Check out Bloomfield or Clifton. You should be able to find stuff in your range.

You could try Bergenfield or Ridgefield Park. Definitely would have been doable a year or two ago, may or may not be now with the current market.

You might find a 2-bedroom condo apartment in a multi-apartment building. That wouldn't give you a private yard, but many condo developments have grounds & many have their own pools, some have their own playgrounds.

Remember to factor into your budget the high cost of NJ Transit.

Look into Elmwood Park. Affordable, safe, diverse, and has a bus and train (Broadway station) into NYC.

@ pinkydapimp Clifton and Bloomfield seem a little out the way are you sure there is frequent enough transportation to and from Midtown Manhattan door to door in under or approximately an hour?
