My wife and I just did a gut renovation .

We are extremely tough customers, but were more than pleased with Vanguard Construction of Maywood. John recently completed a gut renovation of our bathroom and
kitchen in addition to repairing and/or replacing some floors, walls and doors
as well as every window in the house. This contractor has more than exceeded our expectations.

Going into this, we were a bit nervous with the usual concerns that new
homeowners would have. A good communicator, he is customer-focused and keeps you
informed during the process to avoid surprises. The quality in the "big things"
as well as the smaller details is obvious when you look closely at the work.

We don't give out compliments easily, but in this case are happy to refer you to
him:

John Amodeo / Van Guard Construction
938 Spring Valley Rd
Maywood, NJ 07607

Hart Electric / Steve Hart
25 Wilson St
Little Ferry, NJ 07643-1329
(201) 641-4205

MPG Contractor (masonry & concrete work)
Mark Gallagher

We have used American Pride Home Improvement
American Pride Home Improvement

They were actually recommend to us by a neighbor and now we highly recommend them as well! The owner Joe is wonderful to deal with. Very nice guy.

Just make sure that whoever you choose that you check their license with the state. Even if they show you the paper license, call to check. Many have been revoked but the contractors still have the paper license until it expires.
And make sure you get a copy of the liability insurance AND workers comp ins. Call and check that as well to make sure it is still current.

Get numerous quotes and don't just go with the "lowest" unless the lowest is the best one of course. Sometimes your "gut" feeling in meeting the contractor is the best way to go. The shady ones usually never make eye contact and want to get in and out as soon as possible without really sitting and listening to your concerns.

Best of luck in finding a contractor.
