I'm from north Jersey and I can assure you it doesn't feel anything like NY..!! NY has what are called the 5 boroughs.. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Which are huge areas in the state. Even tho SI looks small but it's big too. New York is one fast state I know of, kind of reminds me of Chicago. You can go to NY 3,4 o' clock in the morning and it feels like 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Come to new Jersey like north Jersey it's more calmer then new York. We're kind of chilled laid back. The only time you'll see chaos is during rush hour traffic
The city is one teeny tiny part of New York state geographically,, even though the NY metro area has 40% of the state population. You are aware of that, right?
Northeast jersey (Hudson county mainly, maybe Newark and parts of Southeast bergen county south of the bridge) has heavy NYC vibes.. Hudson county feels more like part of NYC than Staten Island

Over the past few years, I have heard of New Jersey being grouped with New York and in some cases, New England States rather than the classical title as a Mid-Atlantic State. I don't see that much businesses with the word "Mid-Atlantic" throughout NJ unlike PA, DE, MD and DC. Even some US agencies such as the EPA and DOJ place NJ with New York and sometimes New England rather than PA, DE, MD and DC, where it belongs. So this leaves me confused, because most of NJ feels more like PA on the west side and DE on the south side. Maybe NJ also feels like NY on the Northeastern side, but that's about it. I think NJ should be 100% Mid-Atlantic, because that's where NJ belongs. Which parts of NJ feels more like Mid-Atlantic and which parts of NJ feels like NY and NE?
For heavens sake, we can't agree on Central NJ let alone being a mid Atlantic state.
i dont think "tri state area" would be a depiction that overrules "mid atlantic states." one is going to be limited to the specific states that make up that area while "tri state area" is probably something that is used all over the nation for various collections of three states.
