I'm a New Yorker, born and raised, currently living in Manhattan. I recently started working near Parsippany. I know nothing about New Jersey, but it's time to move to suburbs. A few friends of mine live in Fair Lawn and are trying to get us to move there. The commute to work would be great for sure, but I'd like to hear more about the town from people who don't have a vested interest in us moving there. We'd be looking at houses within a mile or so of the synagogue on Morlot.

Others will weigh in, but in the meantime the search function should lead you to a bunch of threads that have discussed aspects of Fair Lawn.
It's OK. Good for Jewish families. But kind of old & dumpy compared to some of its Bergen County neighbors.
It has a high percentage of Jewish residents, but there are 35000 or so people in town. Even the Jewish residents are not the same--there are Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform congregations, just as there is a big active Catholic church and several Protestant denominations and a fair number of Hindus. Some parts of town do scream out 1950s, but the housing runs from large homes to capes to older apartments to newer townhouses. It's a good town as far as lots of sports programs and other activities for families and kids. Not as fancy and upscale as Glen Rock next door, and the price tag reflects it.
I would not consider the daily commute to/from Fair Lawn and Parsippany a good one, when there are towns that will give you what you want much closer to Parsippany.
Come to Livingston. You'll love it. Without the long commute.
I agree that Livingston would be a much better option and you'll actually find similar housing stock for the budget except instead of capes you'll be looking at small split levels that need work.

Or Millburn.
Depends on your budget.
According to Google, it would only take me about 20 minutes to drive from Fair Lawn to my office. It only takes me about 35 minutes coming over the GWB, so I'm not too worried.

That's a good section of Fair Lawn, the Milnes school district area. There are a nice selection of homes over there and its not run down at all. Many homes in Fair Lawn are cape cods built in the 1940's, but there are some newer constructions/renovated homes in that area also. Budget will also matter of course.
Fair Lawn has easy highway access, so your commute won't be bad at all to Parsippany.

Are there parts that I should stay away from? Budget is probably about 550k max.
