Wow, I didn't see her income being that low. Never mind then, it's impossible. A one bedroom would be feasible on that but that is all. But if she makes only 35k here in NY then elsewhere would be tough too on an even lower salary. I don't see how it's possible.

Maybe Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel. I don't know south Jersey all that well, but I spent three months there and enjoyed how much less expensive everything seemed. And it's nice. I would be happy to live there. I was staying in Moorestown, which is lovely but $$$. There's a different city-data category for that part of the state.
NJ isn't just expensive, it's also punitive. For example, when I first moved here, I accidentally let my car registration from my previous state lapse before I transferred it. In NJ, that's automatic impoundment, even if you're on the side of the turnpike with grandma in a wheelchair and three toddlers. (Not what happened to me, but you hear plenty of stories.) My documentation was still in transit, so I couldn't get a drivers license or spring my car because I didn't have my 7 points of identification. It took me more than a week and, after fines, impound charges, and rental car, more than a thousand dollars. Just one of a hundred little indignities. Crappy job market, exorbitant property taxes mostly going to corrupt officials and gold-plated benefits for public workers. I can't imagine moving here without a really good reason.

I don't own a big house, so drop the stereotypes, too. I have a 942 s.f., two-bedroom condo that I bought four years ago for 180,000. I work in NYC. To find a place like that--something I could afford--i had to move further from my job. I have more than a ninety-minute commute each way. I drive a five-year-old Toyota. I am in debt from putting my only kid through college.

Worthy is not an intelligent term in this context. The problem is you don't make enough money to live close to NY City in a responsible way with children. $30,000 would be difficult if you were single. But cramming a family into a horrible roach trap is not a choice that someone with a modicum of sanity would undertake. The goal here is not rational.
And implying that the teenagers are soon to be of "working age" and can help support your existence is a horrible plan. They should be saving all their money for their own education, not being sent out to basically support you.

I have family in SC and a lot of the people they know homeschool. Raleigh/Durham is also very blue and would not be oppressively hot. North Carolina - Election 2012 - NYTimes.com
Seriously, I live here because this is where my industry is and I love being close to NYC. If I could choose a lower COL I would certainly look into it.
Depending on how far away you want to live, certainly check up the Hudson River as well. Lots of cheap space up there.
