My husband and I are considering moving to Hillsdale but are concerned by the town's reputation of extensive flooding. The only resources regarding flooding in that are that I have been able to uncover is in reference to Hurricane Irene. Is there regular flooding due to normal rainfall? We are looking at the Riverside Dr. area. Much appreciations to anyone that can advise us.
Well, it's named "Riverside Drive", and there's a river directly behind the houses.....
Every house has the first floor significantly elevated above the ground, the newer looking homes even more so.
And I suspect that if you look up the flood map on msc.fema.gov, that it will be in a flood zone. However, their site isn't loading for me right now, so perhaps try tomorrow.
Beyond that, I'd caution you that Irene is/was not a once in a lifetime event. If the house flooded in any of the recent storms or Floyd, I'd be expecting it to happen again while you live there. Also be aware that you are probably going to be required to buy flood insurance if it is in a flood zone.
I would avoid that section of Hillsdale near Kings Supermarket, it is in a flood zone. They get flooding when there is heavy rainfall. I believe there is even a warning horn over there when there is potential to flood and residents need to evacuate.
If you like Hillsdale, there are many other sections that don't flood.
Presumably you want to stick to the Hills and stay out of the dale.
