Didn't they just up bridge/tunnel tolls within the last 2 years? The Goethals, for example, is now $13 for cars and has been for almost 2 years now. Hopefully they don't plan on increasing these even more just yet - as they just did. I still can't see how they justify residents of these 2 states paying money to cross their own bridges - bridges that their tax money probably go towards to build and/or maintain. Only in NY and NJ.

Not surprised about the PATH though - I heard it makes no profit?

That is over a 10 fold increase in about 30 yrs. Can't think of many things that have gone up so fast. Look at the brighter side, in another 30 yrs, it might be cheaper to take the limo than to travel in PATH.

PATH is governed under the Port Authority. Decisions to raise fares on it do not indicate decisions to raise fares on the MTA or NJ Transit, which are under completely separate authorities.

As for why they're raising fares, the simple reason is that PATH loses a lot of money, and the PA also has more major $$$ projects going right now than I think they've ever had. Their finances are rather stressed.

I think the Port Authority is quite mismanaged/corrupt, but realistically speaking the PATH fare is still rather cheap. NJ Transit's fare to get across the river is $5.00 from Newark.

No, the Port Authority does not get tax revenue. The bridges and tunnels are supported by the tolls. Not all toll money goes back into those facilities, though. As we all know, the two Govs like to dip into PA money for their pet state projects. Pulaski, for example. PA's biggest revenue producers are the airports.

Yes, PATH runs at a loss. They agreed to run it at a loss when they took it over fifty years ago. The electric bill is in the millions every month. I don't think the fares cover even that.

...and you could buy a Hershey bar for 25 cents up to at least 1968--if you craved poor-quality chocolate.

Things change...

Oh it makes a huge profit - they just pocket it all (salaries).
