We are considering a move from chicago to NY area. I have been told to look in these areas. What are they like? schools? we have 3 kids and a budget of 1.5
Since you are coming from Chicago, you might want to know that Glen Ridge, Summit and Millburn do not have racially diverse public school populations. If that is a concern, you should put Montclair and South Orange on your radar. They also are on the train line and you can find many properties at your price point.
Glen Ridge doesn't have a downtown but most residents do their shopping and leisure activities in Montclair which is 2-3 minutes away.
They're all well-off with good schools. All of them except Glen Ridge have downtowns. Also, do you mean your budget is 1.5 million?
I'm also assuming your budget is $1.5 million. Glen Ridge does actually have a downtown, though. Albeit, it's tiny, but it's only a couple minutes from Ridgewood's downtown, which is quite large (and beautiful, in my opinion).
All three towns have great school systems. And you should be able to find some good homes, depending on what you're looking for. I honestly think that all of these towns are great options for your family, and deciding on a town for you depends on other things you want.

Huh?
Glen Ridge is in Essex County, and Ridgewood is in Bergen County, approximately a 30 minute drive away, passing other downtown shopping districts on the 20 mile drive from one town to the other. Is it possible that you are thinking of Glen Rock?
As to Montclair, the OP should be aware that despite a mostly upscale atmosphere, that town also has a section that is...not very good.
If you're going to consider Montclair then I would say look in West Orange too. The schools and demographics are about the same in both towns yet West Orange is significantly cheaper.
I agree with the above poster. You could also try South Orange or Maplewood. Both are expensive, like Montclair, with good schools and very diverse. Their downtowns are great, too.
