I hiked at this park yesterday. No bear sightings, and the fall colors were absolutely pristine .

We took all precautions possible though. We didn't carry anything other than water and read up on how to deal with bear encounters before leaving.

Not sure this was in the earlier reports. But a couple leaving the area told the 5 Rutgers kids they were chased by a bear and to think twice about going in to hike. They decided to go anyway. And the guy who died snapped a pic of the bear coming at them from about 100 yrds away.

The hikers fell prey to the misinformation the anti hunting crowd and other activists put out about black bear.

After listening to many bear country residents, don't be surprised at more B on H 'natural crimes'. Their misplaced confidence in a special connection with the bears will ensure a coming disaster. That same attitude gets animal handlers in trouble.
