I am moving to New Jersey. The two places I have narrowed down are Florham Park and East Rutherford. Anyone have any insight to these cities? Better of the two? Positives or negatives? I have looked online but would love to hear from people that have been there! I have a young child so safety and schools are important. Thank you!

Are you looking to rent in the Avalon apartments in these towns?

There's a sticky at the top of the NJ forum that they like to have people fill out to give good town recommendations ... But I think if schools are important than ER is probably not the better of the two. It is safe, though. From the people I see who live in the ER Avalon (now Rutherford Station) they look to be mostly singles and/or couples with no children. I don't know anything about Florham park but it looks more suburban and probably has better schools. ER is a good town to commute to NYC.

There is no real comparison imo. Where are you working?

These 2 towns aren't normally compared. They're not really in the same category.

East Rutherford has a good elementary school but after that it's mediocre.
Florham Park is the more affluent of the two.

The reason I have narrowed down these towns is because I found apartments I like in both in price range. They also seem to have low crime and are within a half hour driving to work. This is basically all I have to go on as I don't know anyone from the area. Will be working in Bloomfield. I am unable to make the trip to visit the towns before hand so I am unfortunately having to rely on info I find online.

East Rutherford is a nice, middle class/blue collar town. I don't know about their schools one way or the other. Florham Park is an affluent town with good schools. Though your commute to Bloomfield will be longer from FP, I would still pick Florham Park between these two choices. No contest.

East Rutherford is a safe town and just to clarify, it is not a city, it is a Borough. I know people who have had and currently have their kids in the school system there, and the Elementary and Intermediate schools there are fine. The high school doesn't have a great reputation but there are worse high schools out there. I know a few people who graduated from Becton HS in ER and they are all successful, so I don't think that the schools can be that bad.
