The noise from the Wood-Ridge PD outdoor firing range makes the residential neighborhood that it is next to sound like a war zone. This outdoor range is literally across the street from a children's park and sometimes the shooting is all day long and runs as late as 9pm. The EPA was contacted and said they have received numerous complaints. The range would normally be shut down by them, but remains because it was in place prior to 1970 (even through the houses in the neighborhood are decades older).
Mayor Paul Sarlo basically brushed it off. There is no structure, not even trees to block any of the noise. The outdated range is pretty much just out in the open. It is hard to beleive that noise of this caliber is allowed to continue without any sort of noise abatement.
The sound of gunfire echoes loudly throughout our homes all day long. It used to only occur during the week, however, they were at it this past Saturday.
It is incredibly loud and distressing to everyone. Does anyone live in the area? How do you feel about it, and have you made any complaints?

So you knowingly bought a home next to an outdoor firing range and you're complaining about the noise? Take a number and get in line behind the people who bought homes near the Englishtown drag strip, the old landfill in Bordentown, any number of rail lines, etc... Why in the world would you ever believe that the area should change because you moved in? The sad part is many private ranges have been shut down because of this nonsense but my guess is the town isn't going to close their own police department's range. Still, good for them FWIW I live very close to the public range at Clinton Wildlife Management area, and honestly I don't even hear it anymore. Finally, take solace in the fact that your local cops are practicing that much. I've shot with more than a few cops who rarely got in the range time they were required to, let alone any extra, and they were terrible...
Not knowingly, and it was not disclosed. It definitely would have been a deal-breaker. It is next to Teterboro, which is fine. I knew about the airport noise, it is nothing compared to the firearm noise exposure.
I should add the normal firearms aren't too bad. It's the other stuff they're playing with that no way in hell would they normally use. Maybe this is one of those small PDs that received military weaponry.
I don't have anything against them practicing, I just think that we need some sort of sound barrier.

It would be great if your complaint was considered by the state and to solve it the state allowed the use of silencers to supress the sound, contingent upon federal approve permit application and the purchase of a federal tax stamp.

It's your responsibility to research the area-it's not the responsibility of the seller to disclose such things.

The "military weaponry" that many police departments received was in the form of AR variant assault rifles in .223 caliber. About as noisy as the average 9 mm or .40 caliber handgun. They weren't exactly passing out howitzers and mortars.

Maybe they do, but it's a little late to start demanding one now isn't it? If it really bothers you, you should move.
Just like buying a nice comparatively low priced home next to the airport then complain that the planes are so noisy! Don't like the noise move, problem solved.
We are renters and had no idea that a firing range was on our street. Knew about the airport and the DPW but range is hidden and you don't know until the gunfire starts. Not everyone has the money to move at will or sell to some other unsuspecting person and a facility like that should be public knowledge.
But honestly, if you're not even the home owner just find another rental. Your situation is temporary.
