Hello there! I guess I'll start off by answering the sticky questions.
Where are you coming from? I'm coming from Rockland County, NY
Why are you moving? I'm moving to shorten my commute to college.
Where will you be working ? If NYC, what part of NYC? I'm going to school downtown but I am hoping to have relatively easy access to midtown as well.
Will you buy or rent? I'm looking to rent
What is your budget ? The high end of my budget is $1400/month
What kind of place are you looking for ? I'm looking for a studio apartment located within walking distance to a path station.
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? No
Do you need/want good public schools? No
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc) I would like to live in an area with easy access to transportation that is relatively safe. I don't mind if the area is considered unexciting or unhip. As stated above, I would like to be within walking distance to a path station to help with my commute. Ideally, A commute between 30-45 minutes to midtown NYC would be best.
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc) Safety, Short Commute, Proximity to Path Station
With that out of the way, I can say that I've been looking into the Jersey City area but I am wholly unaware of the neighborhood dynamics and what might be considered safe or convenient. My family is helping me pay my rent while I am in school and they want me to stay in a relatively safe area so that aspect is nonnegotiable. If there are any particular neighborhoods in Jersey City that might meet my requirements or entirely other areas for me to check out, I would love to hear about it! Thanks in advance for any help making this decision.
Perhaps the Journal Square neighborhood, or The Heights would be good places to look, as the rents in those areas are not as high as in the downtown area. Whatever you do, you should avoid both the Greenville and Bergen-Lafayette neighborhoods, as they are high-crime areas.
You are probably best off in Journal Square or Harrison. I love the Heights (live here) and there are cheap rents, but you will be heavily reliant on jitneys, bus and Light Rail and therefore hard up if you are coming home super late due to studying late or group work or whatever. Heights is a little bit better for people going to school at Stevens, or in a phase of life with regular work hours.
