We have a bilevel house in Middlesex. Working on a very tight budget. So trying to work with a handy man , Licensed Electrician and Plumber to help with the construction. Had some minor water damage previously . Spent money out of pocket and fixed it and had damage again ( Sump pump fail) . Both levels were finished when we bought it .

Can someone help with when and what we need permits ?
1) Looking to update the look while repairing some water damage (some parts of lower level all flooring, insulation and sheetrock ripped up a while ago) . Do we need permits to finish this ?

2) I might also re-do the bathroom , just remove tub and do standing shower or put new tub and also replace tiles and fixtures etc. Do we need Permits for this ? .

3) Thinking of changing regular lighting and adding recessed lighting in all the rooms - No change to main panel..Do we need Permits for that ? Using licensed electrician.

4) Thinking of removing regular tub and putting a Jacizzi tub upstairs. Already purchased the tub. DO we need permits for that ?

Appreciate some guidance .

You should totally call these guys:
Permits & Inspections - Welcome to the Borough of Middlesex, New Jersey*

It doesn't sound like you will need permits for this, as it's just a reno, but since you're not trying to dodge the permitting issue but do the right thing, they're going to be the only ones to tell you exactly what you need (or not need!). Nobody online is going to be as useful.

The electrician will know if you need electrical permits. To install recessed lighting you generally would. Probably need a plumbing permit for the tub, because you'll almost certainly move the drain if nothing else. Sheetrock not usually, but some towns require it for outside walls to make sure the wall is insulated. But it all depends on the town, some are more lenient than others.

I may be correct/wrong but this is my understanding

1) no

2) If you are just changing the tub with new one no need for permit. but if you are changing to standing shower then the layout is changing so you may need it

3) no need as you are not adding any new wiring

4) yes because you need new electric wiring to run the motor.

hope this helps
but it all changed based on the town that your are living
