I live in Warren Township, am about to start commuting to Wall Street in Manhattan. (I'm a starving student, not a banker, BTW. Starting a software developer bootcamp.) I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to go. The best option, I'm guessing, would be to get a monthly pass at a park & ride lot in Jersey City and take the PATH train, although if it's not a lot more expensive I might consider taking NJ transit from Gillette or Berkeley Heights to Penn Station, then subway to Wall St… longer commute, but I can sleep/work on the train. Any advice, whether there are cheaper options, or which park & ride to use, etc. would be appreciated, thanks.
Train: RVL from Dunellen Station to Newark Penn, take the PATH to WTC from there. It's about 1:10-1:30. $208.00 for a monthly, Parking is $4 a day or $50 a month with a permit. I think both daily and permit parking is generally available somewhere although you may have a bit of a walk if you're late-morning.
Gillette Station to Hoboken, then PATH to WTC could work, but Long Hill Twp permits are yearly so you'd have to be willing to spend >$300 now. (Gillette doesn't allow daily parking, only Millington does.) I also have no idea about availability. $284 for a Gillette monthly NJT pass. Closer stops a few bucks less, further a few more.
Berkeley Heights to my knowledge is basically off-limits to you, I believe there's a significant wait for permits (>1 year) and they don't allow daily parking until after 9AM. You can check, of course.
Drive: Warren - JC and back is about 60 miles a day. That's probably $5-10 in gas, plus a similar amount (or more) for parking. With the Pulaski Skyway closed it's also a pretty miserable drive much of the time.
Also, this doesn't change regardless of your choice, but add in $85-90 a month for a 40-ride or 30-day PATH pass to your budgeting.
