Narrowing down my home search and wanted to get an idea of the realistic commuting times from Mendham are and what are the commuting options. Looking specifically for Wall st and Grand Central.

I'm pretty sure you could take the train from Bernardsville or Basking Ridge. I don't know how long it would take, though.

You're looking at a time of at least 1 hour 50 minutes (door to desk, depending on exact office location and Mendham location) if you drive to Morristown and catch train there.

+1

All too often, people focus only on the typical amount of time that the train takes from station to station, without considering the amount of time that it takes to drive from home to the RR station and find a parking space, and also the amount of time that it takes to walk from their terminus station to their actual destination.

My favorite saying (which I invented ) is...
Everything takes longer than you think it will.

Until earlier this year my husband worked at Liberty Plaza (so assume the Wall St area train...not sure of exact stations he used) and door to desk taking the Bernardsville train was, as HalfFull says about 1 hr 50 mins. I know he left the house at 7.00, got the 7.15 am train and was at his desk by approx 8.50 am. He also drove someday's if he missed the train and took the light rail for the last leg - it took about the same time or even less if he was lucky with traffic.

Another lesser known tip, there is free parking at both the Peapack and Gladstone train stations. For those living on the Ralston side of the Twp, it is often faster/easier and cheaper to drive down Roxiticus Rd and into Peapack/Gladstone to take the train in, considering the crosstown and Mo'town traffic. Even with the higher train ticket price from P/G you still come out more than $50 ahead per month since you do not have to pay the $160/mo for parking. (Time wise you are about even too)

FYI, when going into NYC using the midtown direct it is better to go from Morristown than B'ville, as from B'ville you have to switch trains in Summit, whereas from Morristown it is a one seat ride.
