Where in central jersey can i find a nice affordable town for a young couple. I'm looking for anywhere within 30 minutes to Princeton and mostly north of it. I kind of like Hamilton square (the furthest south I would go). My home purchase price target is $250-$285 with taxes under $7K. All advise much appreciated.

Thanks

South of Princeton is significantly cheaper than north of Princeton due to leaving the NY area pretty much entirely at that point. Anywhere in Hamilton that isn't pretty much right on top of Trenton is nice. (even the parts by Trenton are at least decent) If you can find anything in Lawrence Township, that could work too. Take a look at the sticky and give more details so we can help more.

I would second south of Princeton. That is about where the NYC influence ends and things are definitely cheaper overall.

In Mercer County, Hamilton and Lawrence are comparatively more affordable. Ewing would have houses in that range, but the taxes are insane (even by NJ standards), especially when you consider the quality of the town. Obviously be mindful of anything too close to Trenton due to spillover issues.

Depending on your definition of "Central NJ", Northern parts of Burlington County (Bordentown, Florence, etc.) might work. Definitely within 30 min of Princeton and more affordable than Mercer.

If you are intent on staying north, maybe consider Flemington or Hillsborough. The downtown area of Flemington has plenty of houses for sale in your range and is about 45 min from Princeton. Not a bad area either and close to lots of recreation. Hillsborough is a bit more affordable than most towns in the area and has its share of nice areas too, but you would have to commute by back roads. Route 206 from Princeton to Bridgewater is a nightmare....

Burlington NJ is a nice place with homes in your price and tax range. There is a 5 BR, 3 BA in Burlington for $257K in a good neighborhood in historic Burlington City. The school system offers 3 and 4 year old pre-school all day for free.
