My water heater broke down Saturday morning. The cost of a new one is around $350.

However, I've been quoted $1,000 to install it!

Does this seem right? Too much?

Anyone know a plumber who can do this at a reasonable cost?

(West Windsor, NJ)

thanks!

That's a little high. I'm sure if you shop you can find $700-$800.

Depends on if they need to power vent it to the exterior or if it's just a simple swap.

Just a simple swap. 30 gallon, short, natural gas.

I mean, what is there to do? Disconnect the gas (there is a shut-off valve), disconnect the water, take out the old one, put the new one in the same spot, connect gas, connect water.

Am I missing something?

I'd almost try it myself, but I'm in my sixties and not too strong anymore. LOL, I tried to shut off the water valve and couldn't turn it!

Get two more prices. You can probably get it don'e for about $250 if it's a simple swap out.

That sounds about right. $250-$300 in labor plus the tank.

Don't forget to dump all the water out of the old one.

I got a quote from Rotor Rooter...$2,500! Of course that included the $350 cost for the actual water heater..

Where are the plumbers who will do it for that cost?

I have been looking and can't find them!

I guess this weather isn't helping anything..sigh. I've been without hot water since Saturday.
