So what's good about South River? (New Brunswick, East Brunswick: apartment, crime, houses)

I was looking into finding an apartment in South River, on the Main Street. Seems like a relatively safe town. Does anyone have any feedback or disagreements?

it s always looked kind of run down to me..i am from sayreville and it s always kind of been a "that side of town" kinda place

Downtown Main Street does look like that-and I had the same thoughts growing up in Milltown, but that is not the entire town. I live off of the "Other" end of main street closer to East Brunswick and it's like a totally different town. What's good about South River is that it is an established town so the taxes are very low compared to other surrounding towns. It's quiet, friendly, and the most crime I've ever heard about (never experienced any) is a bar fight at one of the pubs. It's a small town with a lot of life long and multi-generational residents. The guy we bought our house from was born and raised there, bought his parents house when he got married, his dad moved next door, then he moved into that house when his father died and sold us ours. It is not a "keeping up with the Jones'" town. I like living here.

The entire town of South River is not like that. Main Street can be deceiving but there are plenty of areas that are nice to live in. My office is on Main Street and I see it everyday. There is no real problems with the area. You get used to the look of the street and we have never seen any problems happen there. Plus there are police cars always there since the station is on main street.

I grew up in South River and the town has really made strides since I moved away in the early 70's. I took some photos last year when I was in the area visiting. It was a great town in which to grow up, but there wouldn't be much nightlife unless you go into New Brunswick.

Oooh-the house in the first picture is close to my home. I love that house!! I tell my husband all the time that I'm fine with never moving (I love our house too) UNLESS the owners of that one decide to sell .

I've always loved the houses on Main Street just up from downtown. I am also especially fond of what I call "the world's smallest flower shop". I know the flower shop has at least been there since the 60's; does anyone know of it from any further back?

I lived in South River from 1966 to 1973 and I taught at South River High School. It is a small and friendly town. I have mostly good memories of South River.+

I lived in South River until I was about 5 or 6 and then moved to Spotswood. But it's always been a safe area to be. It's clean, and quite. The cops are always around (mostly it's because I think they are bored!) I agree that the nightlife situation is pretty dim. There are a handful of sports bars, but they seem to mostly be inhabited by locals who have been hanging out there for years and years. But I mean, that could be appealing to some people!

They did build a club over there right? I think it's called "Hummers". Did they ever end up doing anything with that place?

Oh yeah! There's a great pizza place in South river on Obert street off of Main. it's called Coffarro's. Great little place.
