I looked at Maplewood crossing. It didn't seem super secure to me. There was no attendant, you could drive right in the complex and the surrounding area seemed a little sketchy. I don't think I would feel safe there. Also, all the greenery they have on their website was not really there in reality.

I am going to check out Fort Lee. A friend also said it is a great area. And maybe south orange too. I guess I'll nix Avalon

Harmon Cove seems like the best bet so far. It's so cute and charming, is very affordable, has a great pool and seems very safe. Also very close to nyc.

You guys are so helpful here on this forum!! thanks so much!

I live in an Avalon complex, and when I first heard the news that there was a massive fire at an Edgewater building, I just knew it was going to be the Avalon there. Despite the high price of rent, my building was definitely built on the cheap - for starters, the kitchen cabinets basically have Con-Tact paper as veneers.

I'd actually avoid all new mid-rise high-density buildings as a rule. In the last three years, three new large rental complexes have sprung up quickly in the Meadowlands (Vermella, The Monarch and The Station at Lyndhurst), and although they are not managed or built by AvalonBay, they look to have been built with the same materials and with similar architecture. Xchange in Secaucus also looks to have been built the same way.

I have a question for people who know Harmon Cove: my husband and I are very seriously thinking of buying a 3 bdr condo there, townhouse not Harmon cove towers. We love the ambiance and the value. However, has anyone noticed the noise from the turnpike is an issue?? I notice it every time we visit there. We want to buy a kayak and explore the Hackensack river, but the turnpike is such a constant drone. Even in the complex, i could constantly hear cars, from either meadowlands parkway or the turnpike (esp true in units close to water). My question is: will I get used to it? Am insane for even noticing (husband hears nothing)? Really looking for Harmon cove residents to weigh in. Thanks!
