Hi can anyone chime in on the commute from Hoboken or Jersey City to Newark for work M-F and the occasional weekend, by car and/or public transport. Also, can you clarify would this be considered a "reverse commute"?

Ideally want to be situated close enough to Manhattan and Brooklyn for my time off but also close enough to work so that I'm not miserable commuting for hours.

Depends on where in Newark but it is a very easy commute using the Path or Light Rail.

should be a pretty easy commute. especially if you can walk from penn station to work. It would be even easier if you were near grove st or exchange pl path trains.

Yeah the drive will suck because of that. Transit is easy if the job is downtown. From Grove St station in JC it's a 15 minute trip to Newark Penn. Hoboken is farther and requires a transfer so you may have to double the trip time.

I think the OP mentioned Beth Israel over in the NYC forum, so it would be a reverse commute on 78 rather than 1-9. I don't know how bad that is.
