I've been noticing a lot more deer on the road recently. Has anyone else noticed this? This past year I've seen more deer than I have in the 5 years that I've lived here.
I mostly notice them on 287 where it hits 206 and all the way down 206.
I have been noticing a lot more deer than normal in West Orange. There was a group of 5 of them in my backyard the other day. For the last few years Essex County stopped doing their annual deer hunt in the Eagle Rock Reservation, so the deer are now running rampant over here. They still do the hunt every year in the South Mountain reservation, so I would like to know why they decided to stop in Eagle Rock.
There are so many deer in my part of Somerset County that it is difficult to say if there are actually more now than there were a few years ago.
What I do notice is that there seems to be an incredible increase in the hawk population. Most are Red-Tails, but there seem to be some other varieties of hawk present also. If I don't see at least one hawk every half mile or so, it is an unusual day.
I feel as if there are lots of deer where my cousin lives in North Caldwell than there have been in the past. There are also even more deer than normal near my aunt and uncle's house in Passaic County.

I too see lots of deer but its generally moreso in populated areas where hunting isn't allowed and deer are adaptable to these situations but I do feel the severe winter we have had coupled with cold will certainly cause lots of miscarries amongsnt the deer carrying fawns
the increase of birds of pret are a direct result of curbing toxis that we put into the invironment
in other words our environment is much healthier and birds of prey are a guage for our environment
I think it is common to see more deer this time of year because they need to leave the forests in search of food in our backyards. There has been snow on the ground for so long, and after all the cold we've had it's sure to be a delayed growing season.

I believe that you are correct.
And, this increase in the hawk population means that we have a better chance of controlling rodents, so this is a win-win for everyone.
I live across from woods so I always see deer. But I do see them venturing out further than they ever have, onto more main roads and even the school grounds that are on the outskirts of my neighborhood. Not sure if this is because there are more, or they're less afraid to venture off. Years ago they used to run back into the woods from cars simply driving down the street when they were in the field across from my house, now you can walk within maybe 10 feet of them and they will just stare at you before turning around and casually walking away. I think they've just gotten more used to humans and thus are less afraid to explore more.
