I have a 4 year old boy with mild/moderate autism. He is currently enrolled in an inclusion pre-K with special education teacher in class. His current year evaluation was bad and recommended moving to self contained classroom (for KG).

He doesn't have any behavior issues and he is verbal. Jersey city doesn't have option of separate mild/moderate autism classroom.

The dev pediatrician has recommended an autism class with low student teacher ratio with students verbal or at his level or inclusion class with an exclusive aide.

I live/work in Jersey city and would like to move to better school district in commutable distance with separate classroom for mild autism category.

I know Morristown has self-contained autism classes, so that may be one to try. Good luck!

Hi OP, I'm in exact same boat as you. Last sep JCBOE misplaced my 4.5yr old in severe disability class & all he needed was inclusion. We had very tough & challenging time with JC school system & finally I got my son out of the school system. Now he goes to a private autistic center for 1:1s & group sessions & been doing great so far.
We are also going to move out of JC in summers & I've researched on lot of towns that will suit us.

Feel free to call me, I'll be more than happy to provide as much info I've gathered so far. PM me or I'll share my email with you.

Thanks Tania,
I sent you a PM to discuss. How much does it cost for private center? I'll have to think that as well for worst case.

South Brunswick has some good autism program from pre school. They have excellent Special Education System in place. My child has hearing impairment and he is in a self contained program and getting excellent support since Kindergarten, He is in Second grade now. South Brunswick has good resources for Ocucupational and ABA therapists who come home. As well as speech.
