Hi all,

I finally got my first post college job and I need to relocated to NJ. I live in Miami, FL. Great place to party but not live in, honestly. I received my father's car as a gift. I was told to tag, insure, and register it in NJ, so I am having it towed to the place I will be living in, once I find it. Immediately after I arrive, I need to get that done. I won't be able to drive my car so, how does the tag and registration work in NJ? How long does it take? Basically, what do I need to do so I can drive my car in NJ? An estimate will be nice too. I am a bit overwhelmed right now, adjusting to the "real world" as they say. I will be on my own, in a state I've never been to.

Thanks

Someone asked a slightly similar question recently. You take the title and you need a name of an insurance company and policy number and you go to a state NJ MVC office. You get the plates and registration on the spot.

You could do this ahead of time then be able to drive the car here. Catch up later. Easter festivities are beginning here.

You're probably going to need to get a NJ drivers license as well. Go to this site and it will explain the registration, title, and license. The biggest thing to look for is what paperwork to bring with you- especially getting a new license. If you don't have the correct ID they will turn you away.

One item that comes up is kind of a chicken and egg question. You will need an address to register your car and for your license too.

If you can keep the existing plates a week or two until you get all settled or resettled then you could do it that way.

Okay so you will need to shop a few insurance companies to get a quote and then the NJ MVC fees are like $60 for a title and $46.50 for a registration with plates. Some people get special plates. When you title a car there is tax but if a relative gave you the car it's declared a gift so that is one of the exemptions.
