My boyfriend and I are currently living in Brooklyn, and I'm finishing up my last year of law school. I'll be starting a job in Hackensack in the fall and we're starting to look into possible towns to live in.
We'd be renting, so we'd want a decent renting market, and he's likely going to be working in NYC still, off the World Trade Center PATH stop most of the time, and sometimes needing Penn Station. I'd like to be around 20 minutes away from Hackensack, though I'd be willing to commute longer (likely by car) if necessary. For him, he'd like to be an hour or less away, by public transportation (maybe by car).
We'd ideally like rent to be less than $2,000/month, and would prefer renting a house or something with a yard (we have a dog) than a large building--and obviously has to be pet friendly. We'd like a town with plenty of things to do, but doesn't need to be too big. Having a sense of town pride and community would be great, but diversity is also welcomed. We're really not looking for a super affluent, snooty community either.
All the points I've mentioned are fairly open to negotiation, and we're open to any insight or advice you have to offer! Thank you very much in advance!
