There are a few houses I am interested in. I know River Edge has higher taxes and a big issue was with the tax reassessment that occurred in 2012 that hit about 25% of the people of newer houses with bigger taxes...but I'm assuming things have stabilized a bit now. It seems the same house in River Edge will be about 100k or so more in Paramus.
My child is watched by a family member that lives in paramus and my wife commutes to the city (midtown east), so if not River Edge, what other town?
River Edge is a nice town, but the commute isn't great to midtown because you have to switch trains. The tax thing sounds like sour grapes from people who were previously under-assessed.
It will be slightly more expensive, but if you can afford it, I'd go with towns like Ridgewood, Allendale or Glen Rock over River Edge. The schools are even better, and tax rates are about the same. However, the train lines (Main/Bergen as opposed to Pascack Valley) are faster and more reliable.
Paramus has relatively low taxes for Bergen County, so I'd expect houses to be priced accordingly (ie you get less house for the same price than a higher tax town).
All of the above are great towns for a family though.
a house that's 100k more in Paramus might end up with a lower monthly payment overall than River Edge due to taxes. depends on what price range you're looking in.
I have never owned before, just rented. But from what I read there is no limit to property tax deduction for federal, just a 10,000 cap for NJ taxes. So is it really not as bad?

You'll actually get more house in Paramus for your money than the other towns mentioned, despite the lower taxes. That's because the other towns have better school districts and are generally more desirable (not that Paramus is bad). Paramus also has a lot more inventory (supply) because it's a much larger town, which also helps keep the prices competitive.

You will get more for the money in Paramus than Ridgewood or Allendale as they are just more affluent towns. Glen Rock and River Edge I'm not so sure.
but there is no public commute options in paramus, you have to drive.
But Paramus is still a good option.
