I am very confused with the knife laws in NJ. I just want to ask whether or not I can carry a Swiss Army knife or a small folding knife in my pocket. The blade length of the two knives are about/under 2.5 inches.

I looked into this once before buying my survival knife for a camping trip. It's illegal to own "switchblades" which are the kind that pop. Otherwise it's legal to have a knife as long as it's for a "lawful purpose."

Just a quick search...

New Jersey Knife Laws | KnifeUp

Surprisingly, it seems pretty lax here in NJ.. or at least fairly vague.

What about carrying a knife? I mean what is legal to carry?

Both everything and nothing. NJ doesn't have any strict prohibitions, but at the same time requires an explainable lawful purpose for carrying it. And self-defense is not a reason to carry, unfortunately.

Reality is that the laws are extremely vague and unclear which works both ways. A cop can find a way to arrest you for a multitool, a decent lawyer can probably get you out of charges for almost anything for the same reason.

I am not a lawyer and that does not constitute legal advice, do your own research, but don't be surprised to find little clarity or agreement.

Where and under what circumstances? The state of New Jersey does a pretty good job of telling you what you can't carry. What's legal? Beats me. I have a P-38 can opener on my key ring. It opens a can and slices open nasty clamshell packages. On the other hand, it's potentially a *lethal weapon*.

Carry a small multi-tool. Doesn't everyone need a screwdriver and a nail file at hand?

Everyone should have something with a blade in their glove compartment in case the seat belt needs to be cut. And, if you need it for anything else, that's why it was in there.

I have a seat belt cut away tool in my car. It's really sharp. I once touched my finger to the blade and drew blood. It'll work when I need it.
