I am planning to give my New Jersey registered car to my son who lives in Pennsylvania.
Are there any DMV regulations or procedures that would be different than just transferring a title to a NJ resident? Would it be done the same way? Does my son have to inform his insurance company before hand that he will be getting the car so it will be insured when the title is transferred?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Terry

Either you or your son can get on the Penn Dot website for transferring title/plate and ownership. It's all explained. Yes, he will have to have proof of insurance when he gets his plates. If you (or he) belong to AAA, they can be very helpful with getting all of the correct papers filled out and filed. You will actually have to look at the "gifting" of the care if there is no exchange of money being made.

It s pretty straightforward just slightly different than NJ. I lived in Pennsy decades ago for a while and back then they actually let you have a PA license and a NJ license at same time.

Anyway in Pennsy the only place you can get a new plate/reg right away directly from the state is to drive to Harrisburg to the state DMV near the Capitol. Otherwise they have private businesses that have everything, new plates to give you, temporary reg, then that business runs the paperwork over themselves to Harrisburg.
Or you can do the whole thing yourself through the mail and wait which is probably least popular choice.

Also the PA DMV always mails you the title rather than give it to you right away.

Usually you need insurance only when you register the car, meaning if you just title it thats diff, but if you want to drive it yes.

Hopefully they have that same exemption from tax that we have in NJ when a family member gives yo uthe car you clain it as a gift with no sales tax. Otherwise i would say I paid $1 for it.

What they don't have in PA is state run DMV offices all over, just in Harrisburg and the private ones like services called JackRabbits and others that charge you a little extra and run the paperwork over themselves everyday or so.
