Dear City-Data community,

I am a recent college graduate. I am a legal resident of New Jersey, however, I attended school in New York City for four years. After hearing mixed stories about obtaining a basic driver's license in New Jersey and New York, I would like to extend this question to the community. In order to save some cash, I intend to live in New Jersey with my parents while I commute to work (in New Jersey). Will it be cheaper to obtain a license in New York or New Jersey? Thanks so very much for your time. Regards,

Metrosexual277

Its not the license, its the insurance. However, recent changes have brought more insurance companies back into NJ (thus the Geico commercials over the past several years). Prices have come down a bit, and would likely be comparable to NY.

If you are living in NJ you really don't have an option. it costs $34 for a license good for 6 years
Now if you meant insurance by being cheaper....that's fraud..you need to be licensed & have insurance in the state where your legal address is.

Thanks so very much! I will look for an insurance company (probably GEICO) and obtain a driver's license soon.

I would be wary of Geico - I just mentioned that they are back, not that they are good. In fact, they wanted about 3-4 times what I am currently paying for liability only - well over double what I'd be paying for full coverage.

Be sure to get quotes from the likes of NJ Cure, and some online guys like esurance.

Check with Liberty Mutual - they may have a Group Savings Plan for you through your college. I know there is one for Rutgers graduates.

Wen I got my license I changed companies every year. I went from 120/month for liability only to $600/year in 4 years. Good driving record, good grades if your in college, and going to a competitive company = lower rates.
