Its not the license, its the insurance. However, recent changes have brought more insurance companies back into NJ (thus the Geico commercials over the past several years). Prices have come down a bit, and would likely be comparable to NY.

I would be wary of Geico - I just mentioned that they are back, not that they are good. In fact, they wanted about 3-4 times what I am currently paying for liability only - well over double what I'd be paying for full coverage.

Wen I got my license I changed companies every year. I went from 120/month for liability only to $600/year in 4 years. Good driving record, good grades if your in college, and going to a competitive company = lower rates.
