Looking to move to the BH/NP area later this year and was wondering the most common type of homes available in these areas? I've read that both areas have a ton of split level homes which really isn't my style. Is this true?
The area mostly was built-out in the 50s-70s. The housing stock is mostly the types of houses that were prevalent at the time. It's not only split-levels, although there's certainly plenty of those.
If you're looking for recent construction, you're not going to find much, especially at the lower end of the price range.
Yes, tons of split-levels and bi-levels. We were dead set against a split- or bi-level, but after looking at more than a dozen houses in BH (and a couple in NP), I'll admit there were two split-levels that I would have been comfortable with. For us, it made a difference whether the splits were side by side, or front/back. The front/back split we looked at was so awful, and I still wouldn't want to live in a bi-level.
There are also a fair number of capes and ranches, colonials not so many. Like mentioned above, higher priced homes are less likely to be splits. (We ended up putting an offer on a ranch, but it has a walk-up attic, so it doesn't look so ranch-y from the outside.)
Congrats! Good luck! After looking a little more it does seem like you have to spend at least $700K to get a colonial in BH. Colonials only make up about 25% of the current MLS listings in BH, so they are there just not as many.
while you cant really get a great feel for the flow of the house, you should browse on realtor.com at the listings. I am pretty sure they do describe the home as split, or 2 story.
