We have gone to and from Adirondacks from DE this summer and avoided traffic nicely. We have traveled in the wee hours but it has been worth it. We have taken NJ Turnpike to Garden State to 87. Also taken NJ Turnpike to Garden State to 17 to 87. Also done Turnpike to I 287 to 87 and avoided the Garden State.

But Friday I need to go get my son at camp and can't leave DE any earlier than 1pm. That puts me in North Jersey after 3pm. How bad is traffic at that point? What is the best way to go to avoid traffic troubles on a Friday afternoon? Should I also expect conjestion on 87 in NY heading north on a Friday?

TIA

Actual traffic patterns,,, I would generally avoid the GWB areas so going up either NJ 17 or Int 287 is prob best bet.

As far as actual traffic I often pop into either Goog Maps or WAZE on my phone and at least scan the route for incidents.

The Turnpike heading north shouldn't be too bad because most of the traffic will be heading south towards the beaches. Get off at exit 10 and take 287 north into NY. There will likely be some traffic once you hit 87 at the NY state line up through the Ramapo tolls.

To add to my original post, the other option you can do is get off the Turnpike at exit 9 and take Route 18 north to River Rd. River Rd. will take you to 287 and put you on further north than if you got on at exit 10. Might save you some time.

Why not turnpike all the way close to GWB and then Palisades Parkway?
