I am very well traveled. The food here is definitely not cheap, maybe if you're into a portuguese bbq, but the actual nice restaurants are just as if not more expensive then NYC, DC, Philly, Vegas, New Orleans, etc.
More expensive than NYC? Really?
I've been to Portuguese in Hoboken, Jersey City and NYC...the prices are still cheaper in Newark.

We eat 2 large appetizers, soup for two, pitcher of sangria (4+ glasses) and either 2 filet minions or 2 paella's (shrimp/lobster dish). We eat a lot and spend about $100-$120. The portions are huge compared to anything you are comparing it to.
