I lived in SP for 23 years on the Edison side of town.

I took the train from Metro Park with no problems.

Park Ave. to Oak Tree Road to Metro Park. In the evening I took the local streets thru Edison to avoid Oak Tree Road.

South Plainfield can be quite nice, but your commute won't be short. I commuted from Metuchen and lived 2 minutes from the train, and my door to door to midtown was 1 hour 15 minutes including subway time on the Manhattan side. If you have to drive to the train station, figure another 15-30 minutes for parking and whatnot. If you are lucky enough to work right next to Penn Station, then you can shave a good 15 minutes off of that time.
