I am thinking that I'd prefer more of a suburban neighborhood - I also have small dogs that I would like to be able to let outside (don't know how small house rentals are there?). I'd prefer a shorter commute - 30 min. - I just don't honestly know what to expect.

You didn't mention the dogs. That's going to make your search significantly more difficult. Many people don't like to rent to tenants with pets....

Don't know if you have moved yet, but the Bayonne commute to NYC is pretty good. - If you are still in the market to move- let me know & I can give you detailed commuting info.
