If people would put down the cell phones and stop tailgating we could all travel at 75MPH with few crashes. There is no such thing as an accident. When a meteor hits your car that an accident, everything else is somebodys fault.
According to the experts in Germany the Autobahn which has no speed limit, most of the crashes are caused by tailgaters.

I wonder if the fact that these roads tend to go from 4 lanes to 3 (exit 91 or 98 south) without much warning or the acceleration lanes getting on (specifically 88 north bound) has such a short lane contributes to the number of accidents.
I also wonder if these accidents happen more at certain times of the day. I seem to remember when the speed limit was raised that they touted "speed not being a factor" in many accidents.
I'm all for it. The GSP is a dangerous road with many curves and tree's very close alongside the road. Another problem I see is when it rains people don't reduce there speed. I'm seeing more and more roadside "memorials" pop up all the time.
I actually go out of my way to avoid the southbound stretch between 88 and 82. I get off at 88 and drive through the Silverton section of Toms River.
I think adding gaurd rails and reducing the speed will help. If it saves one life its well worth it!
The only good news about speed limits are when they are increased. Speed limits are nothing more than a subversive way to reduce your liberty. Instead of speed limits, tickets should be dispensed based on careless or reckless driving violations. Someone going 80 mph in the middle lane for instance, in low traffic, is not going to cause as many accidents, for instance, as someone who is selfishly driving 50 mph in the left lane. Under this prescription, however, the former driver is in violation, the latter is not.
Speed limits exist primarily so municipalities can supplement their budgets on the backs of motorists. If the intent was to save lives, for instance, there would be none of the negotiating with the town prosecuting attorneys to drop the points violation aspect of the ticket. This merely waives the points, but the town still wants that money of yours. The intent is not to curtail your behavior, rather, the intent is to separate you from your money.

I agree that the person in the left lane is much more likely to cause an accident (and is a selfish jerk), but can't they be charged with a moving violation for doing so as well?

No.
There is no "under the limit" violation in the state of NJ:
I hate that stretch of the parkway.
The lanes also seem very narrow..like in order to gain another lane they just made the existing ones smaller..I drive Interstate 80 every day and take it hands down over the parkway, especially that stretch

I always thought the left lane was a passing lane not a traveling lane
Failure to keep right would be one ticket they could write
