Is a garage on your "must-have" list? If so, check out the Cambridge Manor complex in Middletown, just north of Red Bank off Route 35. They may be a little bit above your price range, though. They have garages and the layout is nice. Still, do a search. Prices have dropped since I bought my place (for $180,000) five years ago. I had looked at Village Green in Hazlet, but happened to have a conversation at work with someone who lived there and he said they were having financial difficulties and had gone through several management companies in a few years--something else to ask about when looking. (I looked at a lot of the condo complexes in the area before I bought mine, so that's why I'm familiar with them. I'm not a real estate person.)
I know someone who lives at Cambridge Manor, though, and she likes it. Although, the grass is always greener. I'd liked the garage and fireplace at Cambridge Manor, but she has no "yard" area that's really hers. I have no garage or fireplace, but I have a private fenced-in patio/garden area behind my unit and she wishes she had that.
I would pick New Brunswick because it's closer to NYC. Also, Red Bank is a bit yuppie/upscale for me. New Brunswick has some decent bars, some of which don't even have any undergrad students.
The area by Commercial/Suydam is totally safe, and the parking there is good. It's not dangerous. I went to grad school there, and my female classmates lived in those areas. It's a little gritty, but personally I like that.
If you are going to buy, your considerations should shift considerably. You need to think about resale, and on that budget, I would look completely out of Red Bank and New Brunswick.

Thanks, Im actually probably going to go with New Brunswick because I seen the house I was interested in yesterday and its absolutely beautiful, no comparison to the Red bank option for the $. Its about 5 minutes from the downtown, and minutes from north brunswick shopping centers. Red Bank looks like a much nicer neighborhood but this house has everything Im looking for. Garage, 2 floors, backyard patio, everything brand new... The one in Red bank is 1 floor, no garage, no backyard. Floors need to be re done. I feel like Im cutting myself short if I pick that. I kinda need a garage because I have an ATV.. I could rent a storage at last resort but this new brunswick place solves that problem. Its a tuff decision but I guess I cant afford the same in Red bank..
