What time does he leave work in the afternoon? There's no traffic at the time he's leaving in the am so you have a better chance at a 1 hour commute from more places. Hazlet, Matawan, Aberdeen are possibilities if he's traveling back home before rush hour.

Usually between 2 and 3pm. He has a buddy that lives in Elizabethtown that leaves at 2:30 and is home before 4. Between and hour and an hour and a half is fine. Especially if he's not the one driving.
An hour of commute, and an hour and half of commute are two very different things. It increases your range by a good 15-20 miles.
This is true. My one fear is that in the summer months that commute home would turn into well over two hours. I really don't know anything about that part of Jersey. We're both originally from LI and have only lived in essex county in NJ.
OP, you will have to compromise on at least one of the criteria. A 3BR single family house within an hour d2d from NYC and 30 mins of Monroe, and good schools - all within 300k is just not possible.
This is spot on.. We lived in Central Jersey for a while. Getting a Single family home, in a safe area with good schools for $300k is just not going to happen. This is even tricky outside of Philly.
My best recommendation would be Old Bridge. Its a great town, but its going to be more like an hr and 15 commute into the city on a good day
I've got a very outside the box idea for you.. Look over near middletown NJ (yes over by the beach)
You might be able to find a spot where its 30-35 mins to Monroe and 15 mins to the Ferry over there. The Ferry ride to Wall street is about 45 mins. The downside is it'll run you about $600 a month.

$600 is steep but since we're both not commuting to NYC anymore its not the worst.
Does Middletown require flood insurance? I know after Sandy a lot of those towns require flood insurance even if their homes aren't anywhere near the water.
Can you give me a little insight on Somerset, N. Brunswick & E. Brunswick?
