Hi Im in a position where I might have to leave my job. I am currently working as a contractor for the cable company. I am a W2 employee and use my own vehicle from job to job on a daily basis. My vehicle is essentially my major work tool as it was required to have been employeed in the first part.

I am no longer in a position to keep repairing the vehicle and it is currently down again for the 3rd time in 6 months and each repair is taking a toll on me financially. I pay for gas, tolls and repairs out of my pocket. I informed my boss of the situation and am unsure of what to do.

He has claimed if i were to quit it would essentially be job abandonment. Would this be factual and would i qualify for NJ UI Benefits?

Thank you for any and all help in the confusing time!

If you voluntarily quit your job I believe you have to wait before you can apply for UI benefits. I just don't remember how long the waiting period is or if your reasoning would qualify.

I think your boss is right and you would not qualify for UI. Your situation is really no different from a pizza delivery guy. They are a W2 employees, but need to maintain a working personal vehicle on their own dime.
