My wife and I have job opprtunitys in Middlesex. What are some cool towns around there to look at as far as living in. We would like to keep rent under $2000 a month. I would like to be closer to the mountains. I like to snowboard, mountain bike ride dirt bikes. My wife wants something with a downtown that's is walk able. I have heard that Summit is nice and I saw that New Brunswick looks like a possibilty.

Thanks

Middlesex the town or somewhere in Middlesex County? Middlesex the town is very small borough between Route 78 and Route 287. Middlesex County, by contrast, is fairly large, so in that case it depends on where you're working. As far as being "close to the mountains" there is a lot of hiking and mountain biking to be done in the northwest corner/north central part of the state with plenty of state park, state forest, and other public lands, but there are no public land ORV trails in NJ. The closest option for that would be upstate New York or PA state forests. I don't know what the rules are for dirtbikes though-the trails there are more geared toward ATVs and side-by-sides, but they may allow dirtbikes. Just to give you an idea though, there are three different ORV parks in the coal region of PA that are about 2.5 hours from New Brunswick. These are 3000+ acre private tracts that allow any type of ORV riding for a fee. I don't ski or snowboard, but Mountain Creek up in Vernon (about 1.5 hours from New Brunswick) is pretty popular with snowboarders.
