Agree that you don't want to live in Jersey City with a school-aged child. Your husband will have to commute to his workplace.

I agree that Edison would be a good choice based on your criteria. It's on the NorthEast Corridor line of New Jersey Transit. See New Jersey Transit - Home for train schedules.

He'd take the train from Edison to Newark and get the PATH train at Newark to Jersey City.
PATH - The Port Authority of NY & NJ

For Washington he'd probably get off the PATH train at either Pavonia/Newport or Exchange Place stop.

There are a lot of office buildings in that area.

I don't know what the parking situation is like at Edison station though.

Safe neighborhood + reasonably good schools + large Indian population and easy access to Indian grocery and restaurants + reasonable commute to Jersey city without owning a car = Edison or Iselin

Alternately, you can live in Jersey city (around Journal Square or in Newport or Exchange Place) but the rents are very high and schools are terrible. If you prefer to live in the suburbs (Edison or Pasippany), you might eventually need a car for grocery and getting around. Highly recommend Edison or Iselin, at least for the first year until you get used to US.

Agree with "davenj08". Edison or Iselin will be a good area to start. Then if you don't mind a longer commute you can move to North Brunswick or South Brunswick. NJ in general is expensive to live. Please make sure you budget accordingly. You will need a car.

Hi,
We reached NJ 15 days back and searching for a house and public school. After researching, we think Edison is the best option based on community need and good school (although husband office will be far..Newport).

1. Can you suggest few best areas in terms of nearby metro and good school in Edison...so that we can target our house search there...( we are using rent.com)

2. "You can always start with edison and move out to better neighbourhoods later if need be. "...what are the better neighbourhoods here referring here?

Your inputs will really help.
Regards,

Based on NJ commuting standards that's not far. <g>

Hubby can switch at Newark for the PATH train to Newport. Look into monthly tix for commuting, that will save a little money.

Is this your first experience in a snow storm?

Welcome to NJ.

While Edison is safe with good schools, there will always be better places. For e.g. Millburn has probably the top notch schools but is expensive and there are hardly any rental places around.
Edison to Newport communte is not bad keeping NJ transit times in mind. You may also find a lot of carpool options if that option works for you.

Living in Woodbridge at Woodbridge Center plaza, taking the bus to the Metropark station (10 mts) and then the direct line that stops only at Metropark and Newark Penn station from where your husband can take the path is the best option. It would take your husband 10 mts (bus) + 20 mts (train) + 20 mts (path) to make a total less than an hour. This is perfectly reasonable commute. The only drawback with Woodbridge is the schools are not exactly blue ribbon quality. So, if you stay in Iselin or Edison and go to the Edison train station, you can get around this but be prepared for a few mts extra on the train since the stop is after Metropark. This is from a desi who has done the whole commute shebang for quite a while.

Regarding #1, Tens of very large rental communities in Edison, most with bus or shuttle access to nearby train station. If you've been here 15 days already, suggest you drive around Edison (use Uber) or consult your husband's desi coworkers/friends who could provide personal advice.

#2 - you have a lot to worry about now. focus on #1 and when you're ready for #2 in a year or two, we'll be around to help.

McNair's not guaranteed, and the tech schools are, while not bad, not particularly good, either. St. Peter's is private and expensive. Agree that there is a lot ignorance going on in this thread, though. For elementary school, the Cornelia Bradford School in the Grove Street/Exchange Place area of Jersey City is quite good. The general Jersey City public schools above elementary school age are weak, but the child is 6 years old - that decision is a long way off (and, especially for recent immigrant families, moving in five years' time is usually not a major negative). That said, the area zoned for Bradford is expensive, though also walking distance to Newport, which may be prohibitive in any case.
