Lambertville, NJ flooding (home, purchase, live in)

My wife and I are looking to purchase a home in Lambertville, NJ. With a history of flooding, we are wondering what people who live there do. Knowing it floods, people still live in the flood plain. Do you just keep most things out of your basement? What can be done to minimize damage?

Yes, don't keep much down there. Put whatever you do store in the basement in plastic tubs, bags or boxes so that you can move it fairly easily.

My mother didn't live in a flood zone, but the basement floor would get wet after days of rain. Everything was on shelves or tables.
