Hi, as the title says, I work in Bloomfield, NJ, and my wife works in the city, midtown west. We are looking to move to jersey where I can be within 30mins drive to work and shes within 45mins public transportation. We dont want to spend more than 1600 for a 1 bedroom. Safety and length of commute matters the most to us, can you guys give me some suggetions on where to live?

Thank you!

Rutherford or Montclair come to mind. Not sure about rent prices in those towns.

Both have NJ Transit train stations. See New Jersey Transit - Home for schedules.

Is your wife's office walking distance from Penn Station?

How about Bloomfield itself?

I think one bedroom at Avalon brand new in Bloomfield is about 2k. The train is right outside so you have no parking cost and easy commute for you. It's a bit higher then your budget but you get a brand new place and excellent convience. Also check out parkway lofts.

think 2k might be a bit too much. if im paying that much rent i might as well buy, we dont want to buy right now because we are not completely settled down yet in terms of careers/family.

Consider Weehawken and Union City. Nowhere else enables both a 30-minute commute to Bloomfield and a 45-minute commute to Midtown West. Decent 1-bedroom apartments are available in your price range, mostly in 2- to 4-family houses. Weehawken and Union City are safe - property and violent crime are possibly the lowest of all urban municipalities in the state.

I'd look at apartments near the Walnut Street Train station in Montclair. Safe Area. Small little downtown and right at the train station for your wife to walk to. Apartments there are around that price.

Nothing from NJ to Central Park is 45 minutes unless you live right on the river but then you aren't paying 1,600 for a 1 bedroom. More like 2,500+.

Why not live right in Bloomfield. It's the same train line as Montclair and will get you into the city in about 35-40 minutes, and you would have a sweet commute right in town.
