I just got a new job, and my family and I will relocate to NJ within the next few weeks. My new office will be in Piscataway. We are trying to figure out a good place to live.
My information is as below:
Where are you coming from? California Why are you moving? Job relocation Where will you be working? Piscataway Will you buy or rent? Rent What is your budget? approximately $2,500/month What kind of place are you looking for? 2BR, townhouse or apartment complex. We would like to have in-unit washer/dryer and covered parking
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you? my wife (who does not work), and a 6-year-old kid Do you need/want good public schools? good public school
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
Safe, family-oriented area
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.
1. good school
2. clean and large living space
3. short commute (30-40min)
Our short list …
Bridgewater (Woodmont Square), Watching (Avalon), Hillsborough (Sunnymeade Run), Montgomery (Pike Run Meadows), South Brunswick (East Gardens & Royal Oaks), East Brunswick (Cranbury Crossings)
We also consider Morristown, Plainsboro, Princeton Junction, Princeton area. Are they too far way from Piscataway?

Thank you
I assume that you'll drive to work? If you need a train or bus, than that's a different conversation.
I would say stay around the Brunswicks (East / South / North) for a better commute. If you're down in Princeton, West Windsor area than you'll spend a lot of time sitting on Route One being frustrated with all the traffic. LOL
Might also want to take a look at Edison or Metuchen.
Elementary schools in Piscataway are average to above average so Piscataway itself wouldn't be a bad choice if you do plan to move in a couple years. If you want to keep your commute to under 30 mins, I also recommend Edison, Highland Park and Franklin township. All three towns have abundance of rental communities and within your price range.
Hillsborough is a large town with its southern tip bordering Princeton. Northern Hillsborough would be ok but anything beyond that would not be fine as OP would have to travel through 206 which is a nightmare.

Since you are working in Piscataway, you should be renting in Piscataway itself which has quite a good number of apartments. The Elementary schools are good, and the area is very safe. If you are of Indian origin, there are tons of Indians living in all of the apartments of Piscataway. Take a look at niche.com to get individual school ratings.
I am not familiar with Avalon in Watchung, but Watchung is an extremely nice area and the commute would be fine.
I agree that commuting along 206, although direct on the map , can be a lot more time than you would imagine. Closer along 206 would b e fine, but it is a heavily traveled road that is 1 to 2 to occasionally 3 lanes.
