How's it going everyone. I'm from Texas and I have a potential summer internship that is located in Morristown, NJ. I wanted to get some information about this city to see if its somewhere I wouldn't mind being for the summer.

What I already know:
I looked on google maps for some info already. I see the population is about 9K so I know that's small AF. My college town feels small and its well over 200k One pro I noticed though was that it is only a 45 minute drive from NYC! That's definitely nice for those weekend trips when I'm not working. That's about all I know about it though.

My questions:
Exactly how small is this city? Is there anything interesting to do in it?
Any other major cities around it at a reasonable distance that I'm not aware of?
Is it an extremely country/conservative city? I've never been this far north when it comes to what looks like a rural area so I'm really curios about the demographics in the area.

If you know a lot about this city, any other information that you think would be useful to me would be great.
Thanks in advance!

NJ towns are generally small, unlike those down South.

All of NJ is fairly liberal, though Morris County is more Republican than other counties in NJ except maybe Hunterdon due to its being rural. Morristown itself has a sizable minority population, so it votes Democrat.

The whole area is fairly wealthy and you will find almost every bank and brokerage has a branch in Morristown (being the county seat of Morris County).

There is a nice community theater, bars, restaurants, and a few museums and historical areas (George Washington did sleep here, after all).

I would suggest taking the train to NYC on weekends since there is a train station in town and the ride is just over an hour to Midtown NY.

While it is a city, it's fairly small and sleepy.

Wikipedia says Morristown had a population of 18,000 in the 2010 census. I know that sounds small, but NJ is made up of lots of tiny towns crammed together, resulting in great density, especially around train stations. There is no comparison between Morristown and a Texas town of 18,000. (I live in San Antonio. I know what I'm talking about.)

Morristown is a very nice, walkable town with plenty to do. I just searched Yelp for restaurants in Morristown and got 148 hits. I don't know that you'll find a hopping singles scene, though. Lots of families with kids. Montclair would be a more interesting alternative, but for a three-month internship there's no reason to pay the higher rents of Montclair and deal with the commute. And, as mentioned above, you can take the train into NYC on weekends.

It's a somewhat conservative part of a traditionally blue state. But you can't compare a New Jersey conservative to a Texas conservative. In fact, I wouldn't necessarily mention that you're from Texas. It's not the most popular state in this part of the country. In general, Morristown residents are educated and wealthy. You won't find a lot of Trump fans there.

Where are you going to school?

I agree with everything said so far, except that I would say that Morristown has one of the best singles scenes (for twenty somethings) in NJ outside of Hoboken and Jersey City, even better than Montclair. Morristown is a small city, with more than its share of bars, clubs, and restaurants. Outside of downtown Morristown, it's suburban with wealthy families. I wouldn't consider it country or rural (you have to go a bit farther west for that), but there are a lot of parks and outdoor activities.

Will you have a car? How much are you willing to spend on rent? While I wouldn't recommend someone live in the area without a car, you might be ok just for the summer if you live in Morristown and your work is within walking distance. Rent is probably higher than you're expecting, so you might need to live with roommates.

I'll second this. Morristown has a much better singles scene than Montclair. There are many more bars, restaurants, and club-type venues in Morristown, and a similar number of fitness clubs and yoga studios. Montclair has more of an artsy-family vibe, and the singles scene is probably older and more artsy leaning. Morristown is much more yuppie. Morristown's scene also draws a lot of young people from the surrounding area; I'm not sure how many actually live in town. For a young person for the summer, there should be enough going on to entertain, and if not, NYC is just a train ride away. Regarding the town's size, as always keep in mind the tiny borders of NJ towns. If Morristown and the township merged, I think its population would be closer to the 40,000. Morristown is also very expensive. OP should be prepared to see a lot of 1800/month studios listed. Best bet for the summer would be to find roommates in an older house on the edge of downtown, maybe the employer could help? I know the National Park has temp housing for summer workers at a substantial discount.

Cool -- I stand corrected about the singles scene in Morristown.

The OP also asked about "major cities." In NJ, the major cities -- Camden, Trenton, Newark, Jersey City, etc. -- are not necessarily places you want to visit. Do check out Hoboken, though. When you want the big city experience, just go to NYC.

HAHA! I'm not conservative at all so no one will here any Trump promotion from me. That's one of the reasons why I was curious. I go to school at Texas Tech which is in Lubbock. I'm from Arlington which is a suburb of Dallas. We all think Lubbock compared to Dallas is extremely small so I was worried about the size of Morristown being even smaller.

That sounds pretty appealing to me. I'll be just turning 21 in May at the start of the summer so a singles scene is something I really want to see.

I weighed the options of driving and flying and figured driving will be more reasonable. The place I'd be working is a 10 minute DRIVE outside of the Morristown square/downtown/city so walking is not an option. It's a 22 hour drive to Morristown from Dallas however so that would be an interesting drive. I need my car though having my own transportation is important to me.

That's good to hear about the bar scene in the city. Definitely looking forward to that then. Especially NYC. That's a weekend trip I see myself making religiously. And yeah I was looking at apartments and the rates were ridiculous! I went to Craigslist and saw some pretty reasonable rates at houses with roommates but some seemed kinda sketch. I've never done that before. Plus I will only be there for no more than about 3 months so finding places that don't require me to sign full leases is a challenge. I'll definitely look into the National Park housing thing though.

I appreciate you all for the amazing feedback. Morristown sounds like a pretty nice city

I think you would be happy in Morristown. If I was a 20 something person, I would pick it over the zoos of Hoboken and Jersey City for sure. Lots to do, with good restaurants and night life without the chaos.

Morristown is a great place for a younger person, I would try to be close to "the green" as possible its a park in the center of town,( near starbucks) Morristown has a nice downtown area (south street)with bars, restaurants, starbuck's, the mayo theatre, very walkable small city, a lot of young people go to Morristown to socialize.

Morristown has a less desirable part of town called the "hollow"(mlk blvd area) you do not want to move to there, I would
try to find a place within walking distance to the south street area near"the green".

the demographics are white majority near center of town(south street area) Hispanic(Columbians)on speedwell ave, black and
Hispanic in hollow area(mlk blvd).

I would check craigslist north jersey apartment "shares" find a place with a roommate if your just going to be here for a few months.

its a liberal town, I would not discuss politics/religion in public, but I think that goes for everywhere in this
country, everyone will probably be nicer to you knowing you are from out of state.
